Sourcing
Why Somaliland?
Myrrh, or Commiphora myrrha in Latin, is native to Somaliland, where its harvesting has been a generational tradition.
How does the process work?
From Somaliland
Myrrh is native to regions of Africa and the Middle East, and has been highly valued as a precious plant since ancient times. Throughout history, myrrh has been used for perfumes, as incense, and for medicinal purposes.
Myrrh essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the resin of the low-growing myrrh tree. The tree has gnarled, crooked, thorny branches with few leaves. The resin is formed from the tree's sap, which first solidifies into a shiny, amber-colored resin, then dries, and over time also becomes darker in shade. To release the tree's sap, harvesters make incisions in the tree, allowing the waxy sap, or gum, to exude. The incisions are monitored to ensure the trees remain healthy and continue to yield well for many years to come.
Fair, Timely Payment
One of doTERRA's key sourcing principles is to ensure consistent, fair payments to growers, including advance payments. This is how fair, timely payments support our partners in Somaliland:
- In addition to fair and timely payments, harvesters receive food and cash payments, which are disbursed in advance at different times of the year.
- doTERRA has eliminated intermediaries from the chain to work directly with those who harvest and select the myrrh resin, thereby providing them with a stable and reliable income.
